Corrosion Control

Corrosion Monitoring in concrete has become increasingly important especially in concrete infrastructure. The steel reinforcement in concrete structures is susceptible to corrosion when chloride ions enter the concrete from de-icing salts applied to the concretes surface or from seawater in marine environments.

If chlorides are present in sufficient quantity, they disrupt the passive film on the reinforcing steel resulting in corrosion. Oxygen content, moisture availability and temperature also effect the corrosion rate. Corrosion of the reinforcing steel can weaken the structural strength, create cracking, delaminating and spalling of the concrete.

Early identification and mitigation of corrosive conditions can significantly reduce the costs of major repairs and the risk of structural failure. Where previously, non-destructive tests and methods of corrosion protection were not available, Post-Tech evaluation, drying, and grease injection systems of testing and protection can now be used. Post tension repairs are required to restore strength and integrity to the structure. Visible signs that a structure needs post tension repairs are: broken tendons that are coming out of the structure, excessive deflection, cracking that runs parallel to the post tension strands and diagonal shear cracks in beams and joists.
